Tijuana Gringo

27 Septiembre 2000.

07:19 a.m. @ Home. Oh that's a strong cuppa coffee. I make it double-strength from my jar of instant, using delicious purified water boiled on my stove. I like to cook.

Took Maria to eat Tortas last night, poom! 120 pesos. But she's so classy I feel a heel not doing something for her. Our birthdays are coming up and I am, frankly, terrified. Want to do something special for her, and know she will do for me, but....

The money I got from the story in the Reader is melting faster than I want. But it is worth it, to take her out. To walk with her through the street, happy and enjoying the energy of downtown. We walk up Revolution Avenue, through the madness, la locura, as she and I call it, and the doormen at the bars call out, "Come on in, free margarita for your lady, Mister!"

Some of the shoot machinegun speed Spanish at us, which I like better.

We walk on the street maybe two, three times a week, and... how long before they begin to know us?

Woke up this morning, about an hour ago, dreaming we had gone for a walk on the slopes of Mount Helix, across the street from my parents' house. I slid down a rock, then lifted her down, and we began kissing. Last night when I saw her to her taxi, she offered me the corner of her mouth to kiss goodbye. We're coming closer to beginning... who knows what?

Thinking of taking another class together, a year-long program in archeology and anthropology at the CECUT (cultural center of Tijuana). But it costs 200 to sign up and 600 a month. But... all those Aztec and Maya and Olmec and Zapotec and Mixtec and Totonac and Huastec and Toltec and Teotihuacan.... I am nuts about ancient American civilizations. This would be four to eight p.m., Tuesday and Thursday. I want it. Not to mention the excellent opportunity to continue my work on academic Spanish. Wonder if there'll be any other gringos? Class is TOMORROW night. Must decide.

Had another inSITE meeting last night with Cecilia Garza. Getting closer and closer to the big weekend when it all begins. October 13-15. Saturday will the La Nube -- The Cloud, Alfredo Jaar plans to release a mass of white balloons in a ceremony to remember the immigrants who have died trying to cross the border. Also Rules of the Game -- Reglas del Juego, where basketball and futbol (aka "soccer") will be played at the same time on the same court, in the gym at the school built on the site of the old casino.

We're going to an art show "Night of the Creativoros" this weekend at the ruins of the casino pool -- all that's left of the ancient casino, built in the 1920s and shut down in the late 30s. My cousin Daniel (who creates me here), who is (like me) also a lover of Mexico, will be joining us there.
