Tijuana Gringo

by Michael Thomas

25 April 2001 -- Wednesday.

City blocks are long and wide on the west side of downtown Tijuana. So large, in fact, that beyond busy street fronts of shops and offices you may still find the hidden hearts of a society surviving from their now vanished century. Behind the taller commercial buildings, old bungalows shelter within tufts of constantly renewing bamboo. Gnarled fruit trees shade the chickens scratching for worms and bugs in the skin of our mother earth. An ancient palm tree or two may announce their great age by the height they have achieved, towering even above the two and three story structures which otherwise screen this elder world from the common view of the street.

Into one such inner world, Michael the gringo will be led this afternoon for tea by the little old lady he helps cross the street in front of the cathedral....
